Let Earth and Heaven Combine…
Posted on 12 December 2011“Let Earth And Heaven Combine, …”
This is the first line of one of Charles Wesley’s wonderful Christmas Carols. There can’t be many hymns that contain the word ‘incomprehensibly’, but that is precisely what the miracle of Christmas is. How can we possibly begin to understand why God would want to come to earth to live amongst us in all our brokenness, our pain, our messiness?
But God did. God himself came to earth to live, not as a powerful King, or wealthy leader, or a national figure, but as an ordinary person like us. In Jesus, God lived and experienced the sorts of things we experience – games played as children, the discipline of family life, school life, work that we understand. He experienced laughter, fun, sorrow, frustration, tiredness, hunger, love, joy, despair, peace and pain. He had friends, he had enemies, he was hated by some and adored by others. He had days when the piece of work he was making turned out beautifully, and days when he hit his thumb with the hammer.
Jesus was in many ways, just like us. But He lived to show us God, to bring us closer to God so that we could experience God’s love for each one of us, and so that we could learn how God wants us to live
– in love and at peace with each other.
Please, do join us at our services over Christmas, where a warm welcome awaits you, and we can learn together of God’s love and how we can share it with each other.
