Sharing Our Faith Together

Jesus Prays for Us!

Reading: Matthew 14 v 22-36

Whenever we read this passage, our attention is drawn to Peter, in the middle of a storm, walking on the water towards Jesus. Yet before this we read of Jesus sending the crowds away, while the disciples set out for the other side of the lake in a boat. Jesus retreats to a solitary place on the mountainside, to pray. While the disciples are out on the lake, the wind quickly picks up and is against them. The image of Jesus praying while his followers are battling the wind should bring us comfort. How conscious are we of Jesus praying for us today? Robert Murray McCheyne, a nineteenth century Scottish minister, who died at the age of 30, once said 'If I could hear Christ praying for me in the next room, I would not fear a million enemies. Yet the distance makes no difference; he is praying for me!'
How many times Jesus prayed for his disciples we are never told, yet it would be a surprise if Jesus had not prayed for them that night, while they were out on the lake. Paul encouraged his readers in Romans 8 v34 'Christ Jesus is at the right hand of God interceding for us.' Jesus prays for us. On his last night of freedom before being arrested, tried, and crucified, Jesus prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane (John 17), for himself (v1-5), for his disciples (v6-19), and then he prayed for all believers, for us (v20-26), 'My prayer is not for them alone (his disciples). I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message.'
What a tremendous encouragement to know that Jesus is praying for you and me.

Prayer
Lord God, Heavenly Father, you help me when I seek you. You are the ever-near friend in times of trouble. I ask you to walk with me every step of my life. Though I know I will face challenges, and be tempted to give up, help me to remain confident that you will see me through. With you I will not be afraid to move forward. For you are my rock and me stronghold, on whom I can rely. In Jesus name. Amen
