Living Waters

On the last and greatest day of the festival, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to Me and drink. Whoever believes in Me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.”   John 7:37-38

Recently we have had problems with our water.  About a month ago the water pipe under the sink in the kitchen burst in the middle of the night, then a couple of weeks ago the stopcock started to leak and had to be replaced.  On the first occasion we had no water for several hours, the second time we had very limited water for 2 days whilst we waited for a plumber to fix it.  When you don’t have water, it suddenly reminds you how much we take our ability to have running water on tap for granted.

It was the last day of the Feast of Tabernacles when Jesus promised rivers of living water for anyone who believed in Him.  This was a time of celebration when the Jews remembered how God provided for and protected them in the wilderness and they praised God for the way He continued to provide for them.  Jesus was promising to give them the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, a gift that we can now receive.  So, when we are feeling tired, confused, lonely… we can ask the Holy Spirit to help us, strengthen us, fill us with His peace and give us His guidance.  I am so glad that the Living Waters never run dry!

Prayer
Heavenly Father, we thank You for Your gift of living water.  Please fill us afresh today, that we may know Your peace and strength in every situation we face, and so we may overflow with joyful praise to You.  Amen.
