Meditations For Holy Week - Holy Saturday

Good Morning

Please follow through today’s meditation taking time to reflect. It may be helpful to have your bible to hand.

As we continue our Holy Week Meditations, for the disciples the drama is complete. Their Leader, Mentor and Hero has been executed. His body removed from the cross, in line with Jewish requirements, and placed in a borrowed tomb. Mark then picks up the story on the third day, Sunday, and is silent regarding Saturday, so we turn to Matthews gospel.

We are to remind ourselves that God is still in control.

Throughout this week we have knelt at the foot of the cross in awe and gratitude, today we leave the cross, but then have to wait, it being the Jewish Sabbath, before we mourn at the tomb

A Prayer

Heavenly Father as we consider your word today, we pray that you will speak to us afresh, as we read your written word, reveal to us new insights of the living Word, and what he went through for us poor sinners.

In Jesus name we pray.

Between Good Friday and Easter Sunday, Saturday almost appears as a quiet day, or is it? For the disciples the drama is complete. Their Leader, Mentor and Hero has been executed. His body removed from the cross, in line with Jewish requirements, and placed in a borrowed tomb. No doubt the disciples were together, possibly in that same Upper Room, in fear. Wondering if they were the next to be summoned or arrested, and executed like their leader.

The religious leaders however, were very active, out of fear. They took Jesus resurrection claims more seriously than the disciples. The disciples didn’t remember Jesus’ teaching about his resurrection, but the religious leaders did. Because of his claims, they were almost as afraid of Jesus after his death as when he was alive. They tried to take every precaution to ensure that his body would remain in the tomb.

The religious leaders were so afraid of Jesus predictions about his resurrection that they made sure the tomb was thoroughly sealed and guarded. As the tomb had been hewn out of rock in the side of a hill, there was only one way in or out. A chord strung across the rock, that had been rolled over the entrance, was sealed by clay at each end. The religious leaders then took a further precaution, asking that guards be placed at the tombs entrance.

With such precautions in place, there was only one way that the tomb could be empty, and that was by Jesus rising from the dead. They failed to understand that no rock, seal, guard, or army could prevent the Son of God rising to life.

Our God is a God, not only of the possible, not only of the unlikely, but our God is a God of the impossible.

Has God spoken to you a fresh through his word, or perhaps this meditation?

Do we realise that when all appears lost, God is still in control?

How well do we know this God of the impossible?
