Ten Pictures of God

Read Psalm 18:1-19
Psalm 18:1-2
“I love you, O LORD, my strength. The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.”
John Rogers (1505-1555), clergyman and Bible translator, was the first English Protestant martyr under Mary I of England who wanted to return England to Roman Catholicism after the death of Henry VIII. His photograph adorns the flyleaf of American preacher Dr Steve Lawson’s preaching Bible, as a source of encouragement. Many people keep pictures of their heroes nearby. On the desk. Book case. Bay window. On the wall. Under the lamp.
God has given us pictures of Himself for the same purpose. David tells us how such pictures had brought him rescue. In gratitude he offers a psalm of thanksgiving, singing passionately as he extolls each attribute: Strength. Rock. Fortress. Deliverer. Rock. Refuge. Shield. Horn. Salvation. Stronghold. Are you weak? He is Your Strength. Are you in captivity? He is Your Deliverer. Do you need a hiding place? He is Your Fortress. It would be impossible to find a challenge that cannot be met by one of these pictures. We ought always to rejoice in the Lord for He has thought of all that could ever go wrong and made provision in advance.
Prayer
Dear Father we give thanks for all the pictures you offer for our encouragement in Christ’s name,
Amen
