The Love of God Beyond Our Understanding
by Peter Lane 17 September 2023
Ephesians 3 v17-20
Then Christ will make his home in your hearts as you trust in him. Your roots will grow down into God’s love and keep you strong. And may you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love is. May you experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully. Then you will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from God. Now all glory to God, who is able, through his mighty power at work within us, to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think.
Although I grew up in a church going family it wasn’t until after I was married that I became a Christian. As I went through my education and started my career as a rail vehicle design engineer, I was used to finding answers to all the questions I asked. In my work this was an invaluable skill to have as it is essential that you could prove that the design of all the components in a vehicle are structurally sound and meet all the appropriate safety requirements.
Unfortunately, it was this way of thinking that was preventing me from knowing Christ. I was forever asking myself questions about the Christian faith but I couldn’t find the answers which proved the existence of God.
That all changed one Sunday service when I listened to the preacher talking about the wind and I suddenly become aware of the presence of God in me. We don’t know where the wind comes from or goes to, we can’t see it but we most definitely know it is there. From that point I understood the meaning of faith and committed my life to Christ.
The love of Christ is too great to understand fully, but on those occasions when we may experience a lack of faith we can look around and see that love of Christ in so many of the people we know.

Prayer
Dear Lord,
We may not understand the mystery, or the measure of your plan, but we acknowledge that you are able to do more than we could ever ask or imagine.
We give you all the glory, for only you are worthy of all our praise. Amen
