Sharing Our Faith Together

Be Still and Know

by Andy Cokayne 22 January 2022
Welcome to ‘Sharing Our Faith’. This was first published on 1/4/2020. New thoughts will continue to appear here, but we also hope you will find encouragement in revisiting some which appeared earlier.

We are going to dig into Psalm 46, but rather than looking at the opening verse let us look at verse 10 ‘Be still, and know that I am God.’

Psalm 46 v 1 - 11

The first words remind of Jesus’ words when he was out on Lake Galilee with the disciples. He fell asleep, quickly a storm came up, the experienced fishermen were frantic. Jesus awoke, “Be still” he said to the storm and all was still. We appear to be in a storm now, and would love for all to be still and calm, but the Psalmist is not saying to the storm “Be still”, but to himself and his readers “Be still”.

‘And know’, we are all known by God, he knows what we are about to say even before we speak, he has counted the very hairs on our heads. But how well do we know him? A little perhaps. In these days of change and challenge, now is the time to get to know him better, or even perhaps for the first time. He is not aloof or stand-offish, he wants to get know us.

‘That I am God’ we are encouraged to get to know someone who is beyond our comprehension, beyond our dreams, more than a Friend; or King; or Saviour; or Creator; he is God and over all, and then to put our trust in him.

Be encouraged, ‘Be still and know that I am God’.

Dear Father,

When all around is turmoil and uncertainty, help me to be still and know that you are my God. That you will not change, that you can be relied upon, no matter what.

In Jesus name, Amen
